It’s been almost 10 years since Toyota teased us with a car that would rival the Mazda Miata. The S-FR, initially unveiled at the 2015 Tokyo Auto Show, teased enthusiasts with promises of a spirited sports car to rival the iconic Mazda Miata. There is now talks about bringing that vehicle to it’s production line possibly in collaboration with Daihatsu or Suzuki.
The S-FR concept showcased a compact yet potent design that hinted at spirited performance. Sporting a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine, projected to deliver around 130 horsepower, the coupe aimed to strike a balance between agility and power. Reports suggest that while the core specifications remain consistent with the original concept, Toyota may infuse the production model with a touch more horsepower, ensuring it possesses the necessary umpf to captivate driving enthusiasts.
The potential partnerships with Daihatsu and Suzuki, helps leverage their expertise and resources to bring the S-FR to production. Such collaborations could streamline production processes and enhance cost-effectiveness, ultimately facilitating a smoother path towards commercial availability.
There is also talks that a Gazoo Racing variant of the S-FR would be released if produced. If realized, this performance-focused iteration could elevate the S-FR to new heights, appealing to those craving an even more exhilarating driving experience.
Enthusiasts and industry enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting further developments, with hopes pinned on a potential unveiling at the upcoming Japan Mobility Show this fall. Should Toyota pull back the curtain on a production-ready S-FR, it would mark the culmination of years of speculation and anticipation, signaling a new era for compact sports cars.
