M1 1981 BMW – SOLD FOR $742,000 USD

This 1981 BMW M1 isn’t just a car; it’s a living slice of automotive history, representing a pivotal moment for BMW and the world of sports cars. As one of only 399 road-legal versions ever made, and with its distinctive Polaris metallic silver finish—a rarity with just three such examples from the factory—it carries with it a story of ambition, innovation, and the relentless pursuit of excellence. Born out of the high-stakes world of late-70s motorsport, the M1 was BMW’s audacious foray into mid-engine design, developed under the auspices of its elite M division. Despite hurdles, including a partnership fallout with Lamborghini, the project was a testament to engineering resilience, culminating in a machine that blended art and performance. Its tubular steel spaceframe and angular fiberglass bodywork, penned by the legendary Giorgetto Giugiaro, not only defined a generation’s aesthetic but also housed a revolutionary 3.5-liter inline-six engine that set the benchmark for power and response.

The tale of this specific M1, with its low mileage and meticulously maintained condition, speaks volumes about the car’s legacy and the reverence it commands among enthusiasts. Originally delivered to Bois d’Arcy, France, in 1981, it has journeyed across continents, from Europe to Japan, and then to Belgium, before making its way to the United States. Each chapter of its life, meticulously documented and preserved, from the original engine to its factory-correct repaint and well-detailed interior, underscores the care and passion of those who’ve had the honor of being its custodian. Beyond its mechanical pedigree, the M1’s storied participation in motorsport, including the Procar BMW M1 Championship, cements its place as a cornerstone of racing history. Now, as it stands ready for its next chapter, this BMW M1 isn’t just an incredible example of automotive heritage; it’s a beacon of the enduring legacy that continues to inspire car lovers and collectors worldwide, embodying the spirit of innovation and the relentless pursuit of performance that defines the very essence of BMW’s M division.
