In a thrilling development for motorsport enthusiasts, Lancia, the storied Italian car manufacturer, has announced its return to the rally racing scene. This news comes after the action-packed rally film Race for Glory: Audi vs Lancia, which may have provided just the spark needed for Lancia to reignite its rally ambitions. Adding to the excitement, the United States is planning to open a new rally course in Chattanooga, Tennessee, expected by 2026, setting the perfect stage for Lancia’s comeback.

The Return of an Icon

Lancia’s return to rally racing is not just a nostalgic nod to its glorious past but a strategic move to reinvigorate the brand under the Stellantis umbrella. The new contender, the Ypsilon Rally 4 HF, is poised to capture the hearts of rally fans and competitors alike.

The Ypsilon Rally 4 HF: A New Generation

Lancia’s rally car of choice for this resurgence is the Ypsilon Rally 4 HF, designed for the “Rally 4” class, which serves as the entry-level category for aspiring professional drivers. This class is known for its accessibility and raw passion, making it an ideal arena for Lancia’s comeback.

Under the hood, the Ypsilon Rally 4 HF boasts a 1.2-liter inline three-cylinder turbo engine that delivers an impressive 212 horsepower. This power is managed through a five-speed manual transmission, ensuring a hands-on, thrilling driving experience. Additionally, a mechanical limited slip differential provides enhanced traction and control, essential for the demanding conditions of rally stages.

The Ypsilon Rally 4 HF is set for launch in May 2025, and it promises to blend Lancia’s rich heritage with modern engineering prowess.

A Strategic Comeback

Lancia’s decision to enter the Rally 4 class is a calculated move. This class is a breeding ground for young talent and future stars of the sport. By positioning itself here, Lancia is not only reigniting its legacy but also investing in the future of rally racing. The brand aims to foster new talent and build a passionate fan base from the ground up.

Team principal Gianni Rossi shared his enthusiasm, stating, “Lancia’s return to rally racing is driven by our deep-seated passion for the sport. The Ypsilon Rally 4 HF embodies the spirit of innovation and performance that has always defined Lancia. We are eager to see how it performs on the world stage and to inspire the next generation of rally champions.”

The Road Ahead

As the motorsport world eagerly anticipates Lancia’s return, the timing couldn’t be more perfect. The planned rally course in Chattanooga, Tennessee, slated for completion by 2026, offers a new and exciting venue for rally competitions in the U.S., further fueling interest and enthusiasm for the sport.

With the Ypsilon Rally 4 HF, Lancia is not just looking to compete but to set new standards in the Rally 4 class. The blend of historical significance and modern technological advancements positions Lancia to capture both the imagination and respect of rally fans worldwide.

Stay tuned to MotorTrend for exclusive updates and in-depth coverage of Lancia’s journey back to rally glory. The stage is set, the engines are roaring, and Lancia is ready to reclaim its place in the annals of rally racing history.
