We look at the Toyota Supra as one of the greatest vehicles ever developed, a work of art that our ancestors would be proud to call a masterpiece. So why would you modify a beautiful specimen? well when I took my trip to Hawaii I knew oh to well that Chris Calimlim could answer this question. “Who wouldn’t?”, Chris Calimlim
Chris’s destiny was already paved for him as three of his uncles owned earlier generations of the Toyota Supra’s, two MKII and a MKIII, so owning one of these magnificent creatures was inevitable. The issue now was how was he going to get there? After years of ridicule from his uncles and having the Fast and Furious franchise fuel his passion, Chris’s dreams started to become reality after he enlisted in Hawaii’s Air National Guard.
Chris knew that in today’s era of enthusiast it’s very difficult to see the creativity in each build but he also knew that the only direction from here was UP!
We all see the same build for the Supra day in and day out rolling with the same parts as the owner to the left. Not Chris, he wanted to be different from the ground up it started off when he removed the restrictive stock intercooler and upgrading the Greddy Front Mount Intercooler.
With a single turbo already in mind he installed a Boost Logic Stage 2 Turbo kit which included a massive 6765 Precision Turbo, 4″ aluminum intake pipe with a K&N filter, Unorthodox Racing cam gears, and Titan Motorsport crank pulleys. Chris was now satisfied with the performance of his newly equipped beast.
Since Hawaii has no tracks the was no need to keep upgrading the equipment under the hood. The next thing on the check list was the looks. I know I talked about being unique and different before but everything looks good with TE37’s why would a Supra be any different? Chris thought the same thing and equipped his ride with a nice set of Volk Racing TE37 SL’s (19×9.5 up front and 19×10.5 in the rear) rolling on those meaty Falken 452’s (245/35/19 up front and 265/30/19 in the rear).
With Engine and Wheels completed Chris decided on getting a nice kit for his Supra. He first started it with a Top Secret kit but grew bored of it fairly quickly that’s when he came across D1 driver, Manabu Orido, Ridox Body Kit and fell in love, he knew that this was the package to set him apart. To modernize the look he decided to add carbon fiber accents that’s when one piece went to two, two went to three and so forth. His Supra now has Shine Auto’s Carbon Fiber Splitters, Fender Guards, Rear Spats, and Rear Diffuser. It wasn’t complete until he finished it off with a Seibon Carbon Fiber KB Hood. Oh and let’s not forget about that big RMM Wang.
You think with the exterior looking this good the inside would be the same? Well….. you’re right!
Hawaii has some vicious roads twist and turns built on the land that once was a Volcano. For any driver ready to race the streets of Hawaii racing seats are a must and what better seats then the Sparco Torino’s armed with the Sparco Harness. To handle the roads like a champ Chris upgraded the steering wheel with a Nardi “Orido Stye” steering wheel with a NRG Quick release giving this Supra the ultimate race car feeling.
No other person on island best exemplifies Hawaii’s car scene as Chris Calimlim and if you saw the build from a year ago all you can see is this is a whole new animal. Just Imagine what this ride will be in a year from now. In the weeks since I left my home state of Hawaii Chris has just installed an VIAir Air Suspension kit.
“These cars are from another era most kids don’t even know what car it is. That’s why I daily drive it. I encourage builders to follow their dreams and let the haters hate.”
Keep the Creativity up, Keep the Passion Going, and Keep the Build Going!!
